The mayor warns drivers and motorcyclists to be safe on the road.
Now that the warm weather is finally here, the mayor announced that the NYPD and the DOT would continue their new Vision Zero safety campaign, “Warm Weather Weekends.” This is geared towards motorcyclists. Motorcycles are more in use in warm weather and are more prone to serious accidents.
“This weekend and all weekends this spring, we need to keep our Vision Zero focus on safety, particularly among motorcyclists,” said Mayor de Blasio. “On warm weekends, we have seen dangerous driving increase. So we are telling both drivers and motorcyclists: when and if the sun comes out this weekend, there will still be absolutely no excuse for dangerous driving. The NYPD will be out in force to ensure you do not travel at speeds that endanger you and your fellow New Yorkers.”
Because it is the beginning of the warm season, drivers can be unused to sharing the road with motorcyclists.
Drivers should be mindful of motorcyclists and always make sure to check their mirrors. Use direction signals and give ample time before making a turn.
