A New Look for the Iconic Chevra Hatzalah Building
By M.C. Millman
The Chevra Hatzalah building at 1070 McDonald Avenue is set to receive a transformative renovation, reflecting the vital, lifesaving work carried out by the extraordinary and essential organization housed within.
Known as the largest non-profit ambulance service in the United States, Hatzalah has been synonymous with lifesaving care since its inception in 1965. Staffed entirely by highly trained and dedicated volunteers, Chevra Hatzalah operates on the principle of selfless service, with responders pausing their lives at any given moment to answer the call of those in need. This unwavering dedication has cemented Hatzalah as a vital lifeline for the community, making Chevra Hatzalah's upcoming renovation a long-awaited and fitting tribute to the heroic and vital organization.
While the interior of the building was transformed into a state-of-the-art facility when Chevra Hatzalah moved in 13 years ago, the exterior has yet to be upgraded to reflect the respectability and exceptional work taking place at the organization's headquarters within. The project, which will begin in the second week of December, is slated to be finished by spring.
"We have been looking forward to this day for a long time," said David Shipper, Executive Board Member and Manhattan Coordinator. "This is not just a building—it's a symbol of Hatzalah's dedication and commitment to every member of our community. This renovation reflects the pride we all feel in the incredible work our volunteers do every day."
Yehiel M. Kalish, CEO of Chevra Hatzalah, added, "This building represents the heart of our mission—service to all. Our decision not to name or dedicate the building ensures it remains a clear symbol of inclusivity, belonging to every community member. This renovation will honor that commitment and further reflect the vital role Hatzalah plays in the lives of so many."
Executive Board Member Isaac Stern emphasized, "This project is more than an upgrade; it's a testament to the enduring legacy and unparalleled dedication of Hatzalah's volunteers and supporters. It's a symbol of the extraordinary care and commitment that Hatzalah embodies every day."
A special acknowledgment goes to Moshe Schonfeld, a member of Flatbush Hatzalah and CEO of REMO Consultants, whose tireless efforts and expertise were instrumental in bringing this project to fruition.
As the façade receives this meaningful transformation, it will serve as a powerful reminder of the remarkable organization within—an organization that has devoted itself to saving lives, one emergency at a time.
