Amazon, Walmart, and NYSE Drop their Mask Requirements

By Yehudit Garmaise

Purim is one month away, but the masks are finally coming off.

Soon after the governors of seven Democratic-led states announced that they would no longer require residents to wear masks indoors, some of the country’s largest private employers, such as Amazon and Walmart, similarly told their workers that they did not have to mask on the job any longer.

While the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is set to ease its mask guidelines for the country next week, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Nevada, New York, and Rhode Island: all states with Democratic governors, recently announced they were dropping their indoor mask mandates. Republican-led states either never imposed mask mandates or ended them last year.

While Walmart employees, who number approximately 1.6 people, who work for the retailer's pharmacies and health clinics must remain masked at all times, the retail giant, like many other employers, are now saying other employees can choose whether they wish to mask. Amazon employs approximately 1.1 million people, many of whom work in warehouses.

In addition, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) has made masks optional for the fully vaccinated workers on its trading floor, and as of Feb. 14, investment banking firm Goldman Sachs, and many large American banks dropped their mask requirements, as well.

Disney’s American theme parks removed their mask mandates for fully vaccinated guest today, and many outdoor concert planners are similarly dropping their mask requirements.

Gov. Kathy Hochul, who dropped her mask mandate for private businesses last week, said on Feb. 15, "Our average [COVID] cases are now at pre-surge levels: The lowest since October 25th.”

After mentioning the state’s spike on Jan. 7, when 90,132 New Yorkers tested positive for COVID, Gov. Hochul said that cases have since dropped by a stunning 97%.

“We now have the lowest case-rate of any major state, any large state in America," the governor said.
