Announced in Boro Park: Mayor Adams Brings New Playground Access with Launch of “Schoolyards to Playgrounds” Expansion
By Y.M. Lowy
Mayor Eric Adams visited Boro Park today to announce an innovative addition to local city life. Speaking at one of several participating schools, he launched the latest phase of the city’s “Schoolyards to Playgrounds” initiative. As part of the expansion, the schoolyard at P.S. 179, 202 Avenue C, and S. 160 William T. Sampson 1057 52nd St in Boro Park will now be open to the public every day from morning until dusk. It is one of 11 schoolyards across the city being added to the program, giving thousands of New Yorkers greater access to outdoor space during the summer and on weekends.
“New York City is the greatest city in the world to be a kid, and today, we’re going to make it even better by making it easier for our kids to play close to home,” said Mayor Adams. “Our schools are home to incredible playgrounds, spaces that shouldn’t be locked away after the school day or when the school year ends, especially in neighborhoods without a lot of public green spaces — and now fewer of them will be.”
The mayor’s commitment includes a $770,000 investment in these new openings, part of what he proudly calls the city’s “Best Budget Ever.”
His visit made it clear that this effort is personal. He sees parks and open space not just as amenities, but as essentials for city families to thrive. “We have to keep our city a place where everyone can raise a family, and this announcement is another way we’re supporting families across the five boroughs,” he said.
The mayor’s vision for a better city is steady and consistent. He listens, follows through, and brings real, practical change. With this new expansion, over 20,000 more New Yorkers will now be within a 10-minute walk of a place to simply enjoy the day. This is leadership that shows up in the neighborhoods and brings real, practical change, and here in Boro Park, that matters.
