As Storm Clouds Loom Overhead, NYC Water Reminds New Yorkers to Remove Trash from Catch Basins

As storm clouds threaten rain today, NYC Water posted a tweet this morning reminding New Yorkers to be sure to remove any trash covering their local catch basins.

“The garbage blocks the drains, and this happens on a lot of corners in Boro Park,” explained Menachem, who lives near the corner of 14th Avenue and 44th Street: a corner that has seen severe flooding after previous rainstorms.

"Our drain system cannot take so much garbage,” pointed out Menachem, who added that Boro Park has unfortunately seen more flooding in past years.

“Bags, leaves, and trash are blocking the drains and preventing the water from easily flowing down the city’s sewer system,” said the lifelong Boro Park resident, who explained that the flooding prevents pedestrians from simply walking down the streets that surround their homes.

“We can’t easily cross streets, so we have to go around the block to other corners to get where we need to go,” said Menachem. “Flooding also severely restricts the paths of parents pushing babies and young children in strollers.

Trash “messes with the flow” of water into the catch basins, which allow the rainwater to drain off the streets, NYC Water tweeted.

Last year, local officials urged the city to help Boro Park to drain their neighborhoods better when the rain pours down, recalled a resident who hopes NYC shows more zrezus in preventing the neighborhood from flooding.

Residents who need help clearing garbage off their drains can file catch basin complaints at on.nyc.gov/2J74we4.

While the city does not accept requests for the installation of new catch basins or reports of personal items in catch basins, New Yorkers can report catch basins that are: clogged, sunken, damaged, or raised.

Residents can also request assistance for catch basins that are missing metal curb pieces and covers.
