As Tolls go Cashless, NYS Thruway Authority Announces Cash Options

By: Yehuda Alter

Over the last few years, the New York State Thruway, as well as other toll roads, have been going increasingly cashless--with no options for travelers who do not have EZ-Pass. Instead, they introduced Tolls by Mail, which would automatically register the toll to the vehicle's license plate, with the bill coming in the mail. Drivers would still need to find a way to pay automatically, with no cash options for payments of Tolls-by-Mail bills.

Today, the announcement comes that cash payment for Tolls by Mail and replenishing EZ-Pass accounts will be possible through VanillaDirect Pay, which has hundreds of locations in any given city.

VanillaDirect Pay will allow drivers to pay with cash at any of the following local retailers: Dollar General, Family Dollar, CVS Pharmacy, Speedway, and 7-Eleven. Drivers will need to present the barcode on the EZ-Pass or Tolls by Mail bill to make this payment and thus make their cash payment toward their balance.
