by YS Gold

We regret to inform you of the passing of Mrs. Friedman, a”h, a Holocaust survivor and matriarch of a prominent Torah family. She was 91 years of age.

The nifteres was the daughter of the legendary Reb Shloime Braver, one of the closest people to the Satmar Rov, and one of the greatest builders of Satmar in America. He was a nephew of the Zhelimer Rov, and found himself stuck on American shores at the outbreak of the war.

She was born in the Hungarian town of Makava, and was fortunate to survive the war together with her mother and siblings, and they rejoined their father after the war. They had been on the way to Auschwitz, but they were returned to a labor camp.

She married, ybl”ch, Reb Leibel Friedman, the longtime Rosh Hakohol of Satmar in Boro Park.

The nifteres was known for her cheerful personality, and stood beside her husband in all of his avodas haklal. She was an incredibly devoted mother and grandmother, who had an open door her entire family. She fiercely guarded and upheld the legacy of her father. “She always strove to improve herself… her entire life,” recalls a grandchild.

“A granddaughter relates: “My grandmother was the epitome of selflessness… no words can do her justice. A true isha yira’as Hashem, and a true aishes Chayil... who was beloved by all.”

The Levaya will first take place at 12:30 pm in front of the Satmar beis medrash on Rodney St. in Williamsburg, and at 2:00pm in front of the Eizenshtater Beis Medrash 5717 12th Avenue. She will be laid to rest near her family in the Beis Hachaim in Kiryas Yoel.

Yehi zichra baruch.
