BDE: R’ Duvid Rosenberg, z”l

 By: Yehuda Alter

We are saddened to inform you of the passing of R’ Duvid Rosenberg, a”l, prominent member of the Satmar kehillah of Boro Park. He was 70 years of age.

He was born to his father, Reb Yaakov Volf Rosenberg, from a prominent family of Spinka Chassidim in Hungary—a member of the She’eris hapleitah who rebuilt valiantly in Williamsburg or yore.

Until the age of twelve years old, he learned in the Satmar yeshiva. As a young lad, he left for Eretz Yisroel, to learn in the Dushinsky yeshiva in Yerushalayim, where he became a Talmid of Rav Yisroel Moshe Dushinsky, zt”l.

Duvid became the son in law of Reb Benzion Gelbman, the founder of the Satmar beis medrash on Tenth Avenue, known as a the “mayor of the entire neighborhood.”  Even the gentiles of the neighborhood revered him; he earned the undying respect of all those with whom he came in contact.

Reb David inherited many of his qualities, including his sense of askonus, and taking on a prominent role in the Satmar Shul. He soon became one of the gabbo’im of he Shul, and in later years he served as its Rosh Hakahal.

He always had something nice to say to everyone,” recalls one acquaintance.

His heart overflowed to do good for others, and he did not stop helping anyone in need. Recalls an acquaintance: “He would regularly lend money to people—large sums. I once approached him for a loan of $10,000. He agreed, but asked what the payment plan would be. I said, I would repay it that same year. ‘No,’ he said. ‘You’re making bar mitzvah this year. You can’t afford it. You will pay me $5000 this year, and $5000 the following year.’ This was his typical fusion of kindheartedness fused with deep wisdom and understanding of others.”

The nifter leaves behind a beautiful family of bnei Torah and ba’alei chessed. Among them is the famed Askan, R’ Abe Rosenberg.

The levaya will take place at 8:00 this evening at the Satmar Beis Medrash on 10th Avenue.

 Yehi zichro Baruch.
