BDE: Reb Meir Tauber, z”l, Longtime Krasna Rosh Hakohol
We are saddened to inform you of the passing of Reb Meir Tauber, z”l, a ba’al chessed and Torah supporter, and Holocaust survivor. He was 91.
Reb Meir was born in the town of Shamloi, Hungary, near Krasna, into a family of chassidim and yirei Shomayim. Being walking distance to Krasna afforded him the proximity to the Krasna Rov, Rav Hillel Lichtenstein, zt”l. He absorbed much emunah and ehrlichkeit in his youth, and was thrown in the turnmoil of the Holocaust at the tender age of fifteen.
He stuck together with his brother who was two years younger than him, and together they survived the horrors of Auschwitz, alone from among their entire family. Meir worked in the kitchen. One day he was able to make off with some potato peels, which he traded in, not for food or clothing… but for a Rosh Hashanah machzor, which he risked his life to allow others to use.
Following the war, he made his way to Mt. Kisko, to the yeshiva of Rav Michoel Ber Weissmandl, whom he considered his Rebbe for all his life. He later went into the egg business, where he was very successful, and later to the food distribution.
He served as the Rosh Hakohol of Krasna kehillah for many years, and was known as a tremendous ba’al chessed and ba’al tzeddakah. He established beautiful generations of upstanding Torah Yidden, and leaves this world with a good name and wonderful deeds.
The levaya will take place at Shomrei Hadas at 11:00 this morning, and will make its way to Eretz Yisroel, where he will be interred alongside his uncle, Rav Elozor Klein, Rov of Be’er Sheva.
