BDE: Reb Mendel Silverman, z”l

by YS Gold

We regret to inform you of the passing of Reb Mendel Silverman, z”l. He was 89 years of age, and leaves behind beautiful generations.

The niftar was born in Hazelton, Pennsylvania, in the year 1933. It took extreme courage and heroism for his parents, Reb Aryeh and Devorah Silverman, to cling to their Jewish faith in those times, and young Mendel absorbed this spirit of mesirus nefesh.

When he was ten years old, his mother sent him to New York to learn in Yeshiva Torah Vodaath, where he became close to his rebbeim there. From there, he went to Telshe, and became a lifelong talmid of the Telsher Yeshiva. Being extremely handy, he was the one who constructed the original eruv of the yeshiva.

When he married tbl”ch, Mrs. Sarah (nee Frankel), the couple settled in Boro Park, where the niftar was one of the pillars of the Telsher minyan. He worked for decades in the yeshiva of Rav Teitz in Elizabeth, and was beloved by all those whom he came in contact with.

He was known for his middah of hakoras hatov, and his respect for old and young alike. He would treat elder men, whom he always understood, even from a young age, with the same geshmak and smile with which he would distribute lollypops to the young children. He was always b’simcha.

Reb Mendel was unwell for the last few months, and was niftar on Shabbos.

The Levaya took place Sunday morning at Shomrei Hadas.

Yehi zichro baruch.
