BDE: Reb Michoel Silberberg, z"l
We are saddened to inform you of the passing of Reb Michoel Silberberg, z"l, a scion of prominent Admorim and Rabbonim, and a longtime Boro Park resident. He was seventy-six years of age.
Reb Michoel was born in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn in 1944. The family lived on Stockton Street, where Jewish Williamsburg of that era was centered. His father was Reb Yitzchok Yisachar Menachem Mendel, a son of the Pittsburgher Rov, Rav Avrohom Binyomin Silberberg. His mother was Rivka hendel, the daughter of Rav Avrohom Binyomin Beinishe Aurbach, known as the Yerushalayimer Rebbe.
He married the former Esther Laufer, and through their daughter, Mrs. Shifra Schwartz, he leaves behind a beautiful Torah family.
Reb Michoel is remembered as an Ish chessed who gave himself away to others. “His entire neshomoh,” acquaintances recall. A longtime mispalel in the Chernobyler Shul, and one of his most active members, he was instrumental in building its Mikvah.
Along with his father and uncles, he worked to build the Gerer Yeshiva Yagdil Torah in Boro Park, where his mother, the legendary “Mrs. Silberberg” worked for many decades, into her 90’s.
A few years back, Reb Michoel was in Eretz Yisroel, where he visited the Gerer Rebbe, shlit”a. On his way out, the Rebbe called him back, and he noted, “You are the only one left from that group who built the Gerer Talmud Torah in Boro Park.”
He remembered the sacrifice and the dedication of the Silberberg family, and of Reb Michoel to the effort in building Torah in America. In Shomayim they will surely remember these contributions, as well as a lifetime of chessed that he so valiantly lived.
The levaya will take place at Shomrei Hadas Chapels at 12:00
