BDE: Reb Volf Abramowitz, z”l
YS Gold
We are saddened to inform you of the petirah of Reb Volf Abramowitz, z”l, a beloved and admired Gerer chossid, a talmid chochom, and yerei Shomayim. He was 68 years of age.
The niftar was the son of Reb Yankel Abramowitz of Chicago, and this is where he was raised in an atmosphere of complete mesirus nefesh for Yiddishkeit. He would carry the influences of the mesirus nefesh from his early youth—inculcated in him by his father, a Holocaust survivor and an ardent Gerer chossid from Poland—for his entire life.
As a bachur, he learned in the Telzer yeshiva in Chicago, and he imbibed a love for Torah that likewise never left him. Thus, his entire life would be a fusion of Torah and chassidus. He later came to Yeshiva Sha’arei Yosher in Boro Park. But his Gerer flame was ignited when he joined Yeshiva Chudushei Harim in Bnei Brak.
“He formed a lifelong kesher with every one of the Gerer Rebbeim, from the Beis Yisroel on down,” recalled a nephew. “He was a chossid to his very core, and his every movement in life displayed that.”
In addition, he was a repository of stories and history passed down from elder chassidim in whose presence he spent much time.
Upon returning to the United States, he married, tbl”ch, the daughter of Rav Meir Mendelsohn, zt”l, proprietor of Mendelsohns Pizza, and renowned talmid chochom and rov.
He taught for a number of years at Yeshiva Yagdil Torah and then worked for many years at Biegeleisen’s seforim store.
“He not only knew every sefer in the shop… he knew many of their contents as well,” his nephew told BoroPark24. “He was a true talmid chochom and yodei’ah sefer.”
Reb Volf was niftar Sunday after battling an illness and leaves behind a beautiful mishpacha of chassidim and yirei Shomayim.
The levaya is taking place at 7:00 at Shomrei Hadas with kevurah in Eretz Yisroel.
Yehi zichro Baruch.
