by YS Gold
We are deeply saddened to report on the sudden, shocking passing of Reb Mordechai Eliyahu, fondly known as R’ Mordy Friedman. He was 64 years of age, and was known for his chessed and his kiruv.
The niftar was born in Los Angeles to his parents, Reb Chaim Aizik and Leah Friedman, Holocaust survivors from Czekeslovkia.
In his youth, he learned in Telz-Chicago, where he became davuk in his rebebim, Rav Avrohom Chaim Levine, and Rav Chaim Dov Keller, zt”l, and this is where he acquired a burning ahavas haTorah. From Telz he went on to the Mir Flatbush, and Mir in Eretz Yisroel, likewise forming lifelong bonds with his rebbeim there.
He married, tbl”ch, Miriam Herzog, the daughter of Reb Feish Herzog, and together they built a beautiful Torah home.
The niftar was extremely close to the Novominsker Rebbe, zt”l, and to Rav Shaul Bruss whose shiur he would regularly attend, basking in the rischa d’oraysa.
Reb Mordechai was beloved by everyone with whom he came into contact, and with his enormous heart, he was mekarev countless Yidden, hosting events for struggling youth, and embracing those whom others had given up on.
Reb Mordy was niftar in a sudden manner on Thursday morning, throwing his family and many friends into shocked mourning.
The Levaya will take place 5:00 this afternoon at the Novominsker Beis Medrash 1644-48th St, and a second Levaya will take place later in the evening at the beis Hachaim in Lakewood, followed by kevurah.
Yehi zichro baruch.
