Boro Park’s Historic Matzoh Bakery Demolished After Devastating Fire

The Boro Park matzoh bakery that was destroyed in a devastating blaze earlier this winter has now been demolished, clearing the way for the construction of a new bakery on the site.
The bakery is widely known as the “Poilishe Matzoh Bakery,” a name that reflects its long history. Before relocating to Boro Park decades ago, the bakery operated for many years on the Lower East Side, serving the Jewish immigrant community there.
The owner, Reb Chaim Braun, drew widespread attention for his remarkable response to the tragedy. As the fire consumed the bakery, he accepted the loss with faith and love, publicly expressing joy in Hashem’s will. His reaction was widely seen as a powerful sanctification of Hashem’s name.
As Pesach 5786 approaches, the absence of the bakery--a symbol of Pesach preparation in Boro Park-- will be felt in Boro Park, as the facility will not be operating this year.
With the site now cleared, residents are looking ahead with hope that a new bakery will soon rise in its place and once again serve the community for many years to come.
