Yenner Rodas was a well-liked laborer at Posner’s Grocery and a longtime custodian at the Chernobyler Beis Medrash.
He was dedicated to the needs of the shul and its mispalelim and put in his usual hours on Friday night, preparing the area where the tish would later take place.
Hours later he was knifed to death in an apparent robbery gone bad.
According to reports, Rodas was with relatives in his neighborhood of Sunset Park, riding an E-bike, when his group was approached by two men from the neighborhood.
One of the men pulled a knife and yelled at Rodas to give him their stuff, likely referring to the bike. Despite Rodas’ efforts to calm tensions, the man stabbed him multiple times, and then made off with the bike. He also wounded the others in the group. His accomplice ran off.
Police and EMS responded to the scene at about 1:00 a.m., and transported the group to the hospital, where Rodas soon succumbed to his wounds. The others are expected to recover.
