Democratic Candidates for NY Governor Debate whom will Improve New York the Most

After all the campaign speeches and ads, in the second and last debate before Early Voting begins on June 18, the Democratic gubernatorial candidates were asked to convey their optimistic ideas quickly and powerfully in their 30-second “elevator pitches” as to how they would make New York better.

Just two weeks before Election Day on June 28, First US Rep. Tom Suozzi, (D-Long Island), was asked “As inflation soars, how do you convince a mom or dad who is trying to make ends meet that their financial situation will improve if you become the governor?”

“You need your elected officials to work for you,” Suozzi responded. “People right now are suffering in New York state, from affordability: because the taxes are the highest in the country, from crime, from corruption, and from kids left behind in troubled schools.

“I am a proven executive, who knows how to get things done in government. I am a common-sense Democrat.

“I am not going to pander to the left or back down to the right.”

Then, Gov. Kathy Hochul was asked how she would respond to a struggling Midtown salon owner who is thinking of moving out of New York after hearing the governor say that workers might never come back to their offices full-time.

“I didn’t say they aren’t coming back,” Gov. Hochul said. “Office workers may not come back five days a week, but we need them three or four days at least, and we are starting to see the trends in that direction.

“I would tell her: ‘Don’t bet against New York,'” Gov. Hochul said. “We have been down before, and we will come back even stronger.”

NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams was then asked to persuade New Yorkers to stay in the state after the pandemic, the high cost of living, taxes, and crime caused New York to lead the nation in population loss.

“I am asking New Yorkers to go in a new direction: to hire a new governor,” said Williams, who instead of advocating for himself, criticized Hochul’s leadership, “not just in the past nine months, but for six years as lieutenant governor that still have you concerned about the issues you have today.”
