FDNY Conducts Ice Rescue Training, Urges Public to Stay Off Frozen Waterways

By Yisroel R.

FDNY conducted a specialized ice rescue drill last week as part of ongoing efforts to prepare members for emergency operations in extreme cold-weather conditions.

According to the department, the training focused on strengthening the skills needed to safely and effectively perform rescues on ice and in cold water environments, where conditions can change rapidly and pose serious risks to both victims and responders.

FDNY officials said the department maintains more than 80 Ice and Cold Water Rescue companies strategically positioned across all five boroughs. These units train year-round in both open water and pool settings to ensure readiness during winter emergencies.

FDNY also issued a public safety reminder, warning that no ice is ever considered safe. Residents are urged to stay off frozen lakes, ponds, and waterways to avoid dangerous situations that could put lives at risk.
