From Tokens to Taps: A Look Back at New York’s Fare History as MetroCards Fade Out

By Y.M. Lowy

As New York moves into a new era of tap-and-go travel with OMNY, the familiar MetroCard is officially heading into history. It feels like it was always here, but the MetroCard era is actually shorter than many riders might think.

The plastic swipe card only became part of everyday subway life in 1993. Before that, New Yorkers relied on subway tokens, a system that lasted far longer and carried its own unique history. When the subway first opened in 1904, the fare was just five cents. Riders dropped a nickel into the turnstile and were on their way. In 1948, the fare rose to ten cents, prompting the Transit Authority to modify turnstiles to accept dimes.

The real challenge came when fares increased to fifteen cents. With no single coin matching the price, the city introduced the subway token in 1953. Over the decades, tokens changed in size, shape, and design as fares continued to climb, eventually reaching one dollar by 1986. Tokens became so common that New Yorkers even invented token holders, small metal clips meant to keep them from getting lost in pockets and purses.

Replacing tokens with the MetroCard in the early 1990s was considered a major gamble. Tokens were simple, durable, and easy to adapt to fare increases. But the MTA saw opportunity in a computerized system. MetroCards allowed for transfers, weekly and monthly passes, and detailed data showing when and where riders entered the system. Over time, the swipe became second nature to millions of commuters.

Now, with OMNY fully taking over and MetroCards being phased out, the city is once again changing how New Yorkers pay to ride.
