Immigrant Numbers Drop As Presidential Election Draws Closer

By Idy Perl
At a time suspiciously close to the presidential elections, the number of migrants seeking shelter in New York City has dropped to under a thousand per week for the first time since 2022.
Between May and June of this year there were roughly 1,100 to 1,500 migrants seeking shelter in NYC every week. As of last week, approximately 64,000 migrants were housed in NYC shelters.
Biden has recently enforced new restrictions on the amount of asylum seekers that can come into the US. In addition, Adams has instituted limits on how long asylum seekers can stay in migrant shelters throughout the city. It remains to be seen what long-term effect these policies at the border and at the shelters will have.
