Juneteenth Closures in NYC Today
By Y.M. Lowy
Today, June 19, is Juneteenth National Independence Day, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. The name Juneteenth blends “June” and “nineteenth,” and it became a federal holiday in 2021.
The holiday marks the date in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the freedom of enslaved people more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
As a recognized federal holiday, all federal offices are closed today. Most major banks, including Chase, Wells Fargo, TD Bank, and Bank of America, are closed.
Financial markets, including the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange, are not operating.
There is no USPS mail delivery today; however, UPS and FedEx services remain open on their normal schedules.
