Mayor Adams' Chief of Staff Recommends Book to City Hall Staffers on Decreasing Ego

City Hall office staffers received an email today from Mayor Eric Adams’ Chief of Staff Frank Carone who recommended that they read and discuss a book that describes how, by decreasing their egos, people can make better decisions, tweeted a reporter from The City.

The book, Ego is the Enemy by Ryan Holiday, says in its prologue, “While the history books are filled with tales of obsessive visionary geniuses who remade the world in their images with sheer, almost irrational force, I’ve found that history is also made by individuals who fought their egos at every turn, who eschewed the spotlight, and who put their higher goals above their desire for recognition.”

The book recommendation from Carone, who, in his senior position, likely largely influences City Hall’s culture, sends a noteworthy message that only those who first conquer their egos can make good decisions for others, and in this case: for New York City.

See how its lessons apply to your life and work,” Carone wrote in an e-mail to workers who sounded happy to get a book recommendation in their inboxes.

“I love working at a place where books are a frequent topic of conversation,” tweeted NYC Communications Director Maxwell Young.
