Mayor Adams Orders City Flags Lowered to Half-Staff After Tragic Manhattan Shooting

Mayor Eric Adams has ordered all flags on city buildings across the five boroughs to fly at half-staff in honor of NYPD Officer Didarul Islam and the victims of yesterday’s deadly shooting in Midtown Manhattan.

The order follows the deadly shooting at 345 Park Avenue, where a gunman armed with an assault rifle opened fire in the lobby and on the 33rd floor of the office building in the early evening. Officer Didarul Islam, who was working a paid off-duty detail in full uniform, was fatally shot while responding to the attack. Three civilians were also killed and several others injured in what authorities say was a targeted and planned act of violence.

On X, Mayor Adams said the city is mourning together. He posted, “As a mark of respect for the memory of NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who died in the line of duty, and the multiple victims of the mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan at 345 Park Avenue yesterday, I’ve ordered all flags on all city buildings and stationary flagstaffs throughout the five boroughs to be lowered to half-staff until further notice.”

Many in Boro Park, where support for the NYPD runs deep, have expressed heartbreak over the loss of an officer who gave his life protecting New Yorkers.

Details about the suspect and the motive are still unfolding. The NYPD and federal agencies are actively investigating.

As news of the tragedy spread, lowered flags in Boro Park and beyond expressed mourning and solidarity for all affected.
