Mayor Adams Promises to Redeploy to Streets: Police Officers who work Desk Jobs, in Coming Weeks

The NYPD will be redeploying trained officers who are currently working desk jobs to the streets, to provide “actual public safety, in the next few weeks,” Mayor Eric Adams said this morning at a press conference at City Hall.

“The crime we are facing needs immediate deployment, and in the next few weeks, we are going to start the next way of movement, said Mayor Adams, who while serving in the NYPD for 22 years, long noticed that too many police officers who graduated from the Police Academy are assigned to jobs that can easily be done by civilians.

Not only are all trained police officers needed on the NYC streets now to better patrol and control crime, but Adams has pointed out that civilians’ salaries, which are lower than those earned by cops, can save the department money. 

No police officers who work desk jobs have yet been redeployed to patrolling the streets, where they are needed, said the mayor, who explained that his administration is “in the process of ensuring that we get the proper civilians to replace [the police officers] to fill those jobs.”

When the mayor was asked whether he might have additional police redeployed to the streets by June, the mayor responded, “June is unacceptable. 

“I am not going to accept June, during which time, traditionally: crime is the highest.”

“In the next few weeks, you will see some of the necessary and appropriate transferring of those who are going to provide actual public safety on the streets.”

“Trust me when I tell you, that is my Number One commitment.”
