More than 200 NYC Leaders Pen Open Letter to Mayor to Support his Plans to End Gun Violence

One week after Mayor Adams announced his Blueprint to End Gun Violence, more than 200 business, civic, and labor leaders signed an open letter that publicly states their unified, enthusiastic, and broad support for the mayor’s proposed ideas that he says will make New York "a safer and more just city."

“There's no time to wait,” the mayor said last week, just three days after Lashawn McNeil shot and killed NYPD officers 22-year-old Jason Rivera and 27-year-old Wilber Mora, and nine days after 40-year-old Michelle Go, a Deloitte executive, was pushed under a subway in Times Square.

“We are going to involve every community, every precinct, and our state and federal partners,” Mayor Adams said when he announced his Blueprint that “will involve the NYPD, every city agency, our courts, and the successful anti-violence Crisis Management System.

“New Yorkers will see and feel these changes quickly. We will ramp up enforcement, deploy more officers on the streets and in the subways, and get our courts at full capacity.”

After the mayor rolled out his plan that was clearly informed by his 22 years as an NYPD veteran, his seven years as a New York state senator and eight years as Brooklyn’s borough president, the city seemed to breathe a sigh of relief.

Even the New York Post said that the mayor’s plan “might work” to reduce what has been ever-escalating rates of violent crime.

"The mayor's blueprint for public safety is a common-sense approach to New York's crime challenges, pairing essential social services and community-based interventions with appropriate tools for the courts and strategies for police,” said Jonathan Lippman, former chief judge of the New York Court of Appeals . “I very much urge our city, state, and federal leaders to collaboratively support the mayor’s smart and practical efforts to both tackle crime and ensure fairness in our system of justice.”

“We support Mayor Eric Adams’ efforts to reduce crime in New York City,” the open letter signed by hundreds reads. “Public safety is the bedrock of a thriving city and, as the mayor has made clear, it is equally necessary to invest in mental health care and alleviate conditions that contribute to violent behavior, including substance abuse, homelessness, and joblessness.”

“The signatories to this letter are leaders in industries that represent more than three million jobs in New York City,” said Kathryn Wylde, president & CEO, Partnership for New York City. “Public safety is the number one concern of employers and workers. We are united behind the mayor’s efforts to reverse the rise in crime.”

“We appreciate and stand with Mayor Adams in his critical efforts to reduce crime and improve public safety,” said Eric S. Goldstein, CEO, UJA-Federation of New York.
