MTA Railcar Testing Facility Near Boro Park Coming to Completion
By Y.M. Lowy
Work is nearly done on the Railcar Acceptance and Testing Facility, where every new train car in the MTA system will go before it joins the subway system. It’s being built on South Brooklyn Railway property, along 3rd Avenue between 38th and 39th Streets, near the 38th Street Yard.
Instead of patching up the old tracks, the entire line here is being fully replaced. JPLC Engineering, one of the subcontractors, says the finished site will have the tools and systems to handle the current fleet and whatever comes next.
Sometimes, residents can catch a glimpse of the new subway cars being delivered along the tracks. Once the facility opens, those first trips will run through here, where each car gets checked, tested, and ready for service.
