National Rifle Association Sued for Corruption

The National Rifle Association (NRA), a gun advocacy organization, is being prosecuted by New York Attorney General Letitia James over their diversion of millions of dollars from charitable funds to high ranked officials' private spending.

The NRA is a non-profit New York-based organization that registers and files all financial reports with the Charities Bureau in the Attorney General's office.

The organization allegedly failed to comply with numerous state and federal laws and have disregarded internal controls that led to the loss of millions of assets.

The litigation explicitly targets four high ranked officials, Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre, former treasurer and chief financial officer Wilson Phillips, former Chief of Staff and the Executive Director of General Operations Joshua Powell, and Corporate Secretary and General Counsel John Frazer.

All four men used their power for illegal and fraudulent conduct. They created an organizational culture of mismanagement and manipulation for personal benefit.

Attorney General James says the only way to move forward is to have the entire organization dismantled because, at this point, the corruption and abuse of power are too deeply intertwined.

"The NRA's influence has been so powerful that the organization went unchecked for decades while top executives funneled millions into their own pockets," James said. "The NRA is fraught with fraud and abuse, which is why, today, we seek to dissolve the NRA, because no organization is above the law."

No criminal charges are currently being filed because the case has fallen under civil enforcement, says James.
