New SNAP Work Rules Take Effect in NYC, Putting Benefits at Risk for Many

By Y.M. Lowy

New work requirements for people receiving SNAP benefits are now in effect, and the changes could impact nearly 2 million New York City residents. Under the updated rules, certain adults must now meet work requirements to keep receiving benefits.

Able bodied adults between 18 and 64 who do not have a disability and do not live with children under 14 must work at least 20 hours a week. They can also meet the requirement by taking part in approved job training programs or volunteering for the same number of hours.

The changes also apply to some groups who were previously exempt, including veterans and people experiencing homelessness. Anyone who does not meet the requirement for three months in a row could lose their SNAP benefits.

The new rules come from legislation signed into law last year. SNAP recipients began receiving notices about the changes late last year.

Some residents have raised concerns, saying the new requirements could add pressure to people who are already struggling with rising costs. Others say work requirements are important but worry about how the changes will be enforced.

Anyone who believes they may qualify for an exemption is advised to contact their caseworker to review their situation and understand their options.
