NEW SUMMER FEATURE: Exploring Boro ‘Parks’: 18th Avenue Park

By Y.M. Lowy

Throughout the summer months, BoroPark24 will be exploring parks near the neighborhood that are worth visiting when you’re looking for a breath of fresh air. In this new column, Exploring Boro ‘Parks’, we’ll take a look at nearby green spaces, some well-known, some less so, that offer a peaceful break just a short ride or walk away.

Known to Boro Park locals as 18th Avenue Park, Gravesend Park sits right along 18th Avenue between 56th and 58th Streets. It’s a favorite for everyone in the neighborhood and one of the area’s most-used parks. What it lacks in hills and views, it makes up for with energy and everyday life.

Gravesend Park was founded in 1917 and has kept up with the times. In August of 2016, the park reopened after 7.5 years and $7.5 million in renovations. Its wide playgrounds are often filled with children, featuring separate areas for younger and older kids. There are two swing set areas, two baseball fields, two basketball courts, four handball courts, seven water fountains, and over 50 benches spread conveniently around, where parents and grandparents sit in the shade while keeping an eye on little ones.

One of the park’s most popular features in summer is the spray fountain, which becomes a happy mess of water, laughter, and squeaky shoes when the weather turns hot. There’s room to run, ride scooters, or just take a break from the crowded streets.

Stay with us as we continue exploring more parks in the weeks ahead.
