New York Nurses Strike Ends

By M.C. Millman

The New York City nurse's strike that dragged out for almost four days at two major New York City hospital systems ended this morning after a tentative agreement with management was reached on improved staffing and compensation.

The nurses from Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan and Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, who have been on strike since Monday, returned to work at 7:00 this morning.

The sticking point in resolving the strike for the last 7,100 holdouts was the insistence that the hospitals hire more staff and pay penalties to nurses working under-resourced shifts. The new staffing ratio agreement goes into effect immediately after decades of hospitals refusing to consider ratio demands.

Montefiore’s new agreement with nurses includes a 19.1% wage increase. It also includes an increase in more than 170 nursing positions, maintaining fully-funded healthcare for those nurses who are eligible and lifetime health coverage for retired nurses, a five-dollar-an-hour increase over standard wages in preceptor and charge nurse pay, an increase for float pool nurses, the addition of more registered nurses and nurse practitioners for the emergency departments, and continued expansion in nurse education infrastructure in emergency departments.

"Through our unity and by putting it all on the line, we won enforceable safe staffing ratios at both Montefiore and Mount Sinai where nurses went on strike for patient care,” New York State Nurses Association President Nancy Hagans said in a statement. “Today, we can return to work with our heads held high, knowing that our victory means safer care for our patients and more sustainable jobs for our profession.”

During the strike, ambulances were diverted from the emergency rooms of the hospitals with ongoing striking nurses, non emergency surgeries were postponed, and temporary staff was called in along with administrators with nursing backgrounds to help to cover the slack.
