Nurse Strike Averted at Maimonides as Agreement Is Reached

By Y.M. Lowy

A potential nurse strike at Maimonides Medical Center has been averted after the New York State Nurses Association announced Wednesday that it has rescinded its 10 day strike notice at seven New York City safety net hospitals.

NYSNA said an agreement was reached addressing key concerns related to pay and healthcare benefits, removing the immediate threat of a walkout. Nurses at Maimonides had been among those preparing to strike after contract talks stalled.

As previously reported, Maimonides warned last week that a strike could seriously impact patient care. In a statement at the time, the hospital stressed the critical role nurses play in daily operations and expressed hope that an agreement could be reached before any job action took place.

The agreement also applies to nurses at Flushing Hospital Medical Center, Interfaith Medical Center, Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, The Brooklyn Hospital Center, Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, and Richmond University Medical Center.
