NYC Ferry Begins New Route System Today
By Y.M. Lowy
NYC Ferry’s big route changes start today, and riders across the city are getting new ways to travel on the water. As previously reported on BoroPark24, the update includes a brand new ferry landing in Sunset Park near Pier 6 that opens up more travel options for the neighborhood.
The redesign takes effect today, Monday December 8. It is the first major update to the system since it began in 2017. With the new Sunset Park stop, riders can now get to Wall Street, Midtown, and East 90th Street without needing to switch boats.
One of the biggest changes is a new connection between Brooklyn and Staten Island. The Saint George route, which used to go only between Staten Island and Manhattan, now stops in Brooklyn before heading to Wall Street. It creates a link that ferry riders have never had before.
The changes were finalized after the EDC received more than fifteen thousand responses to its proposed redesign released over the summer. Officials say the new plan is meant to shorten commute times, improve efficiency, and open more destinations to riders.
