NYC Health Officials Urge Calm Amid Hantavirus Concerns

By Y.M. Lowy

After reports surfaced about New York residents being monitored following travel aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, health officials are trying to calm fears and make clear that the situation is not comparable to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the NYC Health Department, three New York State residents who were passengers on the cruise ship arrived this week at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. The individuals are expected to remain under a 42-day monitoring period while health agencies continue evaluating the situation.

Despite growing conversation online, city health officials stressed that the current risk to New Yorkers remains “extremely low.” The individuals are not currently in New York, and there is no indication at this point of any community spread or broader public danger.

Federal, state, and local health agencies are all involved, including the CDC and the New York State Department of Health, with passengers already identified and under direct monitoring.

The NYC Health Department says it will continue updating the public as more information becomes available, but emphasized that there is currently no reason for alarm.
