Officer Adeed Fayaz, a five-year veteran of the NYPD and officer at the 66 Precinct in Boro Park, succumbed to his injury after being shot on Saturday night after a robbery on Ruby Street and Linden Boulevard in East New York.
The 26-year-old off-duty NYPD officer was critically wounded on Saturday night during a robbery attempt in Brooklyn over the weekend and was declared dead at 3:25 p.m. today after having been placed on life support at Brookdale Hospital for the past three days.
"The NYPD officer served the neighborhood I am honored to represent," Councilman Kalman Yeger tweeted. "He is yet one more victim of New York's revolving door justice system."
Fayaz was shot in the head while he and his brother-in-law arrived with $24,000 cash to check out a Facebook Marketplace deal for a Honda Pilot. An armed robber ambushed the two, but Fayaz's brother-in-law pulled out the downed Fayaz's gun once the officer was down and fired additional shots at the fleeing suspect, according to the New York Post.
"Police Officer Adeed Fayaz was a father, a husband, a son, and a protector of our great city," tweeted NYC Police Commissioner Sewell. "Officer Fayaz was shot Saturday night, and he tragically succumbed to his injuries today. Our Department deeply mourns his passing, and his family and loved ones are in our prayers."
The gunman was arrested last night at the Days Inn in Nanuet. He was taken away in the handcuffs that belonged to the critically wounded officers.
The gunman was identified by police as a 38-year-old career criminal named Randy "Popper" Jones of Harlem. He is now expected to face murder charges in the attack, according to police officials.
