Reader's Write: "Just One Minute" Could Cost Someone Their Home

Dear Boro Park Readers:

I watched something today that should concern every single person in Boro Park.

A fire truck, responding with its lights and sirens, was forced to crawl through traffic because a vehicle was double-parked. Judging by the situation, it looked like the driver had simply run into a store "just for one minute."

But what if that one minute had been the difference between saving a home and watching it go up in flames? What if someone inside was waiting for help?

We often assume emergency vehicles will somehow find a way through. Many times they do—but every unnecessary delay matters. Seconds can make the difference between life and death.

And this problem doesn't affect only emergencies. Every day, double-parked vehicles create traffic backups, block buses, delay deliveries, frustrate motorists, and make it harder for everyone to get where they need to go. It has become so common that many barely notice it anymore.

No one is saying there aren't times when stopping briefly is unavoidable. But too often, vehicles are left double-parked simply because it's more convenient than finding a legal parking spot a short distance away.

Boro Park is a busy neighborhood, and we all share its streets. A little more consideration can go a long way. The minute saved by one driver may end up costing dozens of others their time—or, in the worst-case scenario, delaying the emergency response someone desperately needs.

Let's remember that "I'll only be a minute" isn't always just a minute for everyone else.
