Readers Write: Do It All the Way
Recently, as reported on BoroPark24, significant construction work took place at the intersection of 54th Street, 55th Street, and New Utrecht Avenue.
The project, aimed at enhancing safety at this notoriously dangerous intersection, involved redoing, expanding, and installing new sidewalks.
While residents remain divided on whether these changes will genuinely improve safety or have the opposite effect, there is one concern on which everyone agrees: the lack of a crosswalk.
Despite the city's efforts, including the installation of a pedestrian ramp—standard at every crosswalk—a crucial element is missing at the corner of 55th Street: the crosswalk itself. The absence of this vital safety feature has left many questioning the thoroughness of the project.
Can the DOT complete the job and ensure pedestrian safety by adding the much-needed crosswalk at 55th Street?
Residents are hopeful that this oversight will be addressed swiftly to fully realize the intended safety improvements.
