Readers Write: Hashem Is With Us, No Matter Who Is Mayor
To My Dear Boro Park Neighbors,
It’s the day after Elections, and now’s the time to take a deep breath. Many of us woke up this morning in a panic over Zohran Mamdani being elected - yes, a socialist mayor, and yes, some, or many, of his views may make you uncomfortable- but as long as we know that we did our hishtadlus, we can face the news with a sense of calmness. The world is not ending.
This was followed by news and social media posts about swastikas found at a Brooklyn Yeshiva this morning - a story that literally blew up online and became the conversation everywhere. It is frightening, nothing like this should ever be tolerated, in our neighborhoods or anywhere else. It strikes at the most sensitive parts of our hearts and foundations. Yet, sadly, this is not new. Just last summer, teenagers spray-painted swastikas in our very own 18th Avenue Park. The police removed them, and the next day they were back. Did the news blow up? Did politicians - from Adams, to Hochul, to local leaders - condemn it with horror? Not what I remember.
Challenges always have been and always will arise - it’s part of our galus story. Stay strong, look forward, and don’t lose balance. This is why we must not panic at every dramatic media headline. Don’t fall for the game: the more attention these acts receive, the more power they gain, and the more they risk becoming a trend.
The mayor’s election is not something we voted for, and while we hope our city remains a good place to raise our children rather than taking a steep downturn, now is the time to continue living our foundational lifestyle. We are in the same good hands as we were yesterday. Hashem is always with us. Our community is strong and united. And if you are truly worried, there is something you can do about it - just as we have done until now: open a Tehillim and remember whose hand is really on the wheel.
Let's stay focused,
Chana T.
