Readers Write: Our City’s Snow Response Needs a 2026 Wake-Up Call
Dear Editor,
First, thank you to BoroPark24 for posting and bringing attention to the chaotic situation in Boro Park during last week’s snowstorm. Baruch Hashem, the worst of the street chaos was resolved over the weekend, though some of the aftermath remains. Delayed trash pickup and other service disruptions continue to affect daily life.
Now is the time to seriously examine and revamp how New York City responds to snow, especially in dense neighborhoods like Boro Park. Garbage truck plows may have been acceptable in the 1800s, but they are not appropriate for 2026. Cities, towns, and villages across the country - and around the world - have long since adopted modern snow-removal systems, including specialized tractor plows, smaller equipment for corners, sidewalks, and bus stops, and targeted street-clearing tools.
We are far behind. This storm should serve as a wake-up call.
There is no reason that 11 inches of snow should paralyze an entire city. In Boro Park, schools were forced into early dismissals largely because traffic became unbearable as a result of the messy snow cleanup, narrowed lanes, poor plowing, and blocked bus stops. Friday school cancellations followed, disrupting families and daily life. Even now, large piles of snow are still sitting on corners and along the streets, creating unsafe conditions.
Our community deserves a modern, efficient snow response system that reflects today’s realities, not outdated methods from another century. Now is the time to act; we all saw the consequences with our own eyes. Let the City learn from this and improve now, so we don’t have to go through the same disruption again next year - or five years from now.
Sincerely,
Ruchy B.
