Sen. Felder and Assemblyman Eichenstein Explain How Smaller Shuls Can Apply for Security Funds

By Yehudit Garmaise

State Sen. Simcha Felder and Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein are hosting, on Tuesday, Feb. 22, from 3 to 6 pm,

a free information session for participants of smaller shuls: those with fewer than 200 mispallim and little or no staff, to apply for the United Jewish Appeal’s (UJA) new grant that will $5,000 per shul to bolster security.

The money is marked to pay for new doors, locks, and video cameras for Brooklyn shuls. In addition, the Community Service Initiative (CSI), which is running the program, will provide training for staff and congregants on how to better guard all entrances and how to respond to active shooters and other threats.

“No synagogue should be left without proper security measures just because they lack access to necessary funding,” said Eric S. Goldstein, the CEO of UJA-Federation of New York. “Whether praying in the largest shul in Manhattan or the smallest shtiebel in Brooklyn, every Jew deserves the right to worship in peace and security.”

Sen. Felder and Assemblyman Eichenstein urge Boro Park’s smaller shul leaders to attend Tuesday’s workshop at which they will speak with experts and register for the free grant program that will provide better protection for the neighborhood.

Simple measures can save lives: such as locked doors, which were lacking at the many nationwide shuls that allowed in terrorists and basic security training.

Charlie Cytron-Walker from Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, Texas, for example, claimed his security training saved his life and those of three congregants who were held hostage at gunpoint for 12 hours on Jan. 22, after he created an opportunity for escape by throwing a chair at 44-year-old Malik Akram.

The UJA-Federation of New York created the fund with the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of New York to provide better protection for Brooklyn’s many shuls, which are not usually able to access the government security funding that is available for larger shuls.

State Sen. Felder and Assemblyman Eichenstein’s workshop will take place at Assemblyman Eichenstein’s district office, which is located at 1310 48th Street, on the 2nd Floor.
