Temperatures Near Record Lows Across NY
Yisroel R.
Temperatures across New York and New Jersey dropped to near record lows early Tuesday morning, as a cold air mass settled over the region.
Many areas fell into the low 30s, well below the average for April 21, which is around 48 degrees in Central Park. The unusual cold is being driven by persistent Canadian air remaining in place.
Historical data shows the coldest April 21 temperature in Central Park was 26 degrees, recorded in 1875. At JFK Airport, the record low for the date is 34 degrees, set in 1956, while LaGuardia’s record stands at 33 degrees from that same year.
Some suburban areas were expected to come close to or even break those records, especially where temperatures dipped below freezing overnight.
The National Weather Service also issued freeze warnings for parts of the region, cautioning that the cold could damage or kill sensitive plants.
Temperatures are expected to gradually rise later in the week as the cold air moves out of the area.
