Today in History: One of the Deadliest Earthquakes ever hits Haiti

(TF)

A horrific earthquake hit Haiti on this day, 12 years ago.

It was Tuesday around 5 p.m. when the tragic disaster rattled the beautiful island of the Caribbean.

Around 150,000 people died and many more were injured leaving the country in utter devastation.

The poverty and poor infrastructure, for which the country is known, contributed to the high death toll.

Many countries responded to appeals for humanitarian aid, pledging funds and dispatching medical teams.

‘Hope for Haiti Now’ was a fundraising campaign that raised $58 million in one day.
