Today in History: The Emoira Ravina passes away marking the end of the Talmudic period
By Toby Friedman
Many years ago today, was the day the emoira Ravina passed away. Ravina’s father died when he was young, he was therefore educated by his mother. He, along with his teacher Rav Ashi collected and commented on the rabbinic discussions that would henceforth be known as the Talmud Bavli. The Talmud (Bava Metzia 86) already tells us about a letter, given by Hashem to Adam, which stated that Rav Ashi and Ravina will be the last ones to add commentary to the Talmud. And in fact, Ravina’s death in 4260 (499) marked the end of the Talmudic period.
