What’s Open and What’s Closed This Thanksgiving
By Y.M. Lowy
Today is Thanksgiving, and the city is running on a holiday schedule with closures and service changes. Roads are expected to be busier throughout the weekend, so it is wise to allow extra travel time.
All locations of the United States Postal Service are closed. Only Priority Mail Express is being delivered today. Regular mail and retail postal services return on Friday. UPS is also closed and will not operate pickup or delivery services until tomorrow.
Alternate parking rules and street cleaning pickups are suspended. Garbage collection is also paused for the day. Most banks are closed as well, part of the standard Thanksgiving schedule.
Manhattan is seeing extensive closures this morning for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The parade continues until around noon, though many of the surrounding streets will remain blocked until about three in the afternoon.
With the serious events reported yesterday in Washington DC, the Police Department has increased its presence and security coverage across NYC.
The city is extra busy today, so it helps to plan a little extra time and stay aware of the holiday changes as services run on a different schedule.
