Pharmacies May No Longer Sell Cigarettes in NYC

7 Jan 2019 5:54 PM

NEW YORK – Pharmacies are now forbidden from selling cigarettes or other tobacco products in New York City after legislation passed last year by the city council went into effect.
The ban also includes businesses that contain pharmacies, such as supermarkets. The city’s health department says the change will affect about 500 pharmacies who currently sell cigarettes.
“Today we celebrated a historic win in the fight against Big Tobacco: Tobacco products can no longer be sold in pharmacies in New York City!” Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted today. “We are that much closer to our goal of ensuring that 160,000 fewer New Yorkers are smokers by 2020.”
