$100 Million Climate Hub Coming to Brooklyn Waterfront

$100 Million Climate Hub Coming to Brooklyn Waterfront

By Y.M. Lowy

A major new project is taking shape just minutes from Boro Park. City officials are investing $100 million into the Brooklyn Army Terminal, a large waterfront complex in Sunset Park, turning it into a center for climate technology, job training, and education.

The project, known as “BATWorks,” will bring together startup companies working on climate solutions. These companies will be able to test new ideas in a real city environment, something that’s not easy to do elsewhere. The goal is to help them grow faster while also finding practical ways to deal with issues like extreme weather, energy use, and pollution.

The initiative is being led by the New York City Economic Development Corporation along with national partners focused on clean technology and innovation.

It’s expected to bring around 600 jobs and generate billions of dollars in economic activity over time.

BATWorks is expected to fully open by 2028. In the meantime, city officials are planning an open house next week to give the public a closer look at what’s coming.

With its location near Boro Park, this is a project many local residents may start hearing more about in the coming years.
