$37.9 Million Awarded to New York Recipients of Federal NSGP Homeland Security Grants

by M.C. Millman

The Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA), a Department of Homeland Security branch, announced the funding of $37.9 million for 195 New York nonprofit organizations under the FY 2023 Nonprofit Security Grant Program, which includes numerous shuls, yeshivas, schools, and organizations facing increased risks of terror or other extremist attacks across the United States and New York.

New York mosdos, shuls, and nonprofit organizations reported receiving funding award letters in their emails this morning after waiting since April to hear if their funding requests would be granted.

The funding will be used to strengthen the security of these facilities, as well as enhance their overall preparedness. This funding, provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency through its Nonprofit Security Grant Program, is being allocated to New York through two separate awards - $33.3 million for organizations within the New York City Metro Area and $4.2 million for organizations throughout the rest of the State. The New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services manages these programs in close coordination with local stakeholders.

Organizations were able to apply for $150,000 per site, not to exceed $450,000 per organization.

The purpose of the NSGP funding is to enhance the ability of nonprofit organizations to prevent, prepare for, protect against, and respond to terrorist or other extremist attacks. The grant program is part of a comprehensive set of measures authorized by Congress and implemented by the Department of Homeland Security to help strengthen the nation's communities to prevent potential terrorist or other extremist attacks at the country's most vulnerable sites.
