80,000 New Yorkers So Far Have Received $100 Incentive to get Vaccinated

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced this morning that 80,000 New Yorkers have now received the $100 incentive to get vaccinated.

The $100 incentive is likely one big reason for the recent spike of the number of the city’s vaccinations is that shows that 75% of adults in New York City have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

Vaccination is more important than ever, the mayor said because of the city’s new threat: the delta variant.

“The delta variant is not the same as what we what we saw in the beginning of this pandemic,” the mayor said. “This is a tougher challenge, but it is one we can fight back with vaccinations.

In terms of the city’s vaccination efforts, the mayor was enthusiastic that they are  “growing all the time.”

“[Our incentives and mandates] are working,” the mayor said. “[Getting vaccinated] is important to people.”

Ted Long, MD, MHS, the senior vice president of the Office of Ambulatory Care and Population Health at NYC Health + Hospitals told a story in which he spoke to one of his patients who was shocked to hear that everyone in his family would receive the $100 if they all got vaccinated.

Dr. Long also told his patient that he would send someone to his family’s home to do their vaccinations.

“This $100 incentive made a difference,” Mayor de Blasio said. ”In fact, so much so that President Biden endorsed it and suggested it for other parts of the country as well.”

Today, Mayor de Blasio, who is pushing for the city's 12 to 17-year-olds to get their shots before returning to school in a month, also promised that parent-teacher associations (PTAs) will now receive $100 for every student and family member that they bring in to get vaccinated.

“Think of the virtuous circle here,” the mayor said. “People get vaccinated: individuals get vaccinated, the PTA gets $100 for each person it brings to get vaccinated.”
