Amazon Go-Going-Gone as the Company Is Set to Close Eight Casherless Locations

by Mindy Cohn

Eight cashierless Amazon Go locations are set to close in Amazon's latest round of cost-cutting measures resulting from slowing sales growth.

The New York, Seattle, and San Francisco stores will stay open only until April 1. The remaining twelve stores scattered across the U.S. will remain open - for the time being.

Amazon's first cashier-less store opened in 2016 in Seattle near Amazon headquarters. It offered meal-on-the-run options, but its success was severely curtailed with so many people working from home due to COVID.

Besides the upcoming closure of these eight stores, Amazon has also closed bookstores and novelty shops across the U.S. during the last few years.

Last year, Amazon began cutting costs as the pandemic waned. The company froze most of its corporate hiring and laid off 18,000 workers.

Construction at the company's second headquarters near Washington has also been paused.
