BDE: Mrs. Yitu Markowitz, Co-Founder of Satmar Bikur Cholim
We are saddened to inform you of the passing of Mrs. Markowitz, a woman who dedicated her life to chessed, and Boro Park resident for decades. She was 98 years of age.
Yitu was born in 1923, in Gurahantz, Romania, near Klausenberg, to her parents Rav Alexander Chaim and Raizel Schwartz, the Rov and Rebbetzin of the town.
As a young wife and mother in 1944 she, together with her husband R’ Yosef Sholem Markowitz, provided refuge for Jews escaping the holocaust from Hungary. They provided them with food and shelter and emotional support.
Mrs. Markowits was the president of Satmar Bikur Cholim which she co-founded with the Satmar Rebetzen, a”h. Thousands of patients and their families have benefited from Satmar Bikur Cholim for more than 60 years.
Satmar Bikur Cholim under the leadership of Mrs. Markowitz addressed any and every need of the patient, ranging from financial assistance for medical bills, transportation to Doctors, home cooked meals for people in hospitals, and visiting patients to provide emotional sustenance.
Mrs. Markowitz was niftar earlier this week, leaving behind an incredible legacy of chessed, and beautiful Torah generations.
