BDE: Rav Lipa Margulies, zt”l, Rosh Yeshiva of Torah Temimah.

We are saddened to inform you of the petirah of Rav Chananya Yom Tov Lipa Margulies, one of the greatest builders of Torah in Brooklyn. He had been ill of late, and was in his mid-90’s.

The Rosh Yeshiva was born in the town of Horench, Hungary. His father Rav menachem Mendel Margulies, a great talmid chochom and the rov of the town. He was in Auschwitz, where his entire family was killed. He was fortunate to survive the Holocaust… but he was alone in the world.

Torah became his entire world.

He learned in Torah Vodaath and in Beis Medrash Elyon, where he became close to Rav Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz, and with Rav Reuven Grozovksy, zt”l. Here he was known for his ahavas haTorah, and his brilliance in learning. His ga’onus manifested itself in his own Torah learning… and in building Torah.

In the early 1970’s, he established Yeshiva Torah Temimah, a place that would evolve into one of America’s preeminent Torah institutions. He was a brilliant visionary, in every aspect of leading a Torah institution.

Faculty of the yeshiva recall his exceptional talents and brilliant mind all applied to build the yeshiva and its talmidim. He hired outstanding talmidei chachomim and mechanchim, and treated them exceptionally well. He insisted on personally going over the progress of each and every one of the talmidim.

The yeshiva produced thousands of alumni over the years—with numerous Roshei Yeshiva and marbitzei Torah among them.

Over the years, the yeshiva expanded with branches in Staten Island, and a thriving yeshiva in Lakewood.

Yeshiva Torah Temimah and its alumni will stand as an everlasting testament to the strength, the fortitude, the brilliance, and the vision of its great founder who built a Torah empire which will continue to impact the Torah world in immeasurable ways.

The levaya will take place at 11:30 at Yeshiva Torah Temimah on Ocean Parkway and Ditmas Avenue.
