BDE: Rav Meir Hertz Lifishitz, Spent Decades in Boro Park
By YS Gold
From Eretz Yisroel comes the sad news of the passing of Rav Meir Hertz Lifshitz who lived in Boro Park for thirty years. He was 89 years of age.
He was born in Yerushalayim to his father Reb Zeidel and his mother Leah, and was raised among the tzaddikim of the holy city who molded his remarkable character for which he was known his entire life.
He learned under Rav Yosef Salant, and spent much time in the presence of the great tzaddik Rav Elya Roth. They imparted to him a spirit of yiras Shomayim and middos tovos which he carried with him throughout his life. He was also close to the Admorim of Aleksander and Zvehill.
He served as one of the first leaders of the kashrus division of the Eidah Hacharedis, working under the Ga’avad, Rav Yitzchok Yaakov Weiss, the Minchas Yitzchok.
About forty-five years ago, he moved to Boro Park. He was the ba’al tefillah for Yomim Nora’im in the Aleksander Shul, and his tefillos were known to be filled with sweetness and longing. He served in this holy capacity for decades, and his tefillah and middos tovos are remembered by many Boro Parkers who knew him. His son, Reb Moshe Lifishitz, is one of major askonim of Bonei Olam in Boro Park.
About 15 years ago, he returned to Eretz Yisroel, settling in the Brachfeld neighborhood of Modi’in Illit, where he was part of the kehillah led by his son Rav Shimon Lifshitz.
The Levaya took place on Tuesday, and Reb Meir Hertz was interred on Har Hamenuchos.
Yehi zichro baruch.
